Former Top Democrat Senator Sentenced To 11-Year Prison Term

Former Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) characterized his 11-year prison sentence for corruption as a result of a ‘political prosecution,’ pointing to the legal challenges faced by former President Trump as proof of a prejudiced justice system.

Menendez was convicted of accepting bribes and serving as an agent for Egypt, making him the first U.S. official to be found guilty of acting on behalf of a foreign government while in office.

In a statement made outside the courthouse, Menendez remarked, ‘President Trump was correct… this procedure is politically motivated and corrupt.’ He did not disclose if he intends to request a pardon from Trump.

Menendez stepped down from the Senate last year following the loss of his committee chair position. He is said to be contemplating a return to politics, potentially as an independent candidate.
