“Coronation Street Bombshell: Fans Split Over Sue Devaney’s Powerful Turn in Debbie’s Shocking New Storyline!

Metro readers have been blown away by Coronation Street star Sue Devaney after heartwrenching scenes which saw Debbie Webster learn she could have young-onset dementia.

Fan-favourite Debbie decided to make an appointment with a private clinic during Wednesday’s (April 9) edition of the ITV soap following a series of incidents which left her concerned about her health.

After discussing the incidents in question with the doctor, she was referred for more tests, with the medical professional believing that she’s exhibiting signs of young-onset dementia.

Debbie struggled to process the news, with powerhouse star Sue breaking the nation’s heart with a devastatingly real performance.

Metro exclusively confirmed last year that Debbie would be diagnosed with dementia in a storyline that would ultimately lead to her exit. The news sparked outrage from fans, who largely consider the character to be cobbles royalty.

A petition was launched in the hopes of getting bosses to reverse the decision, while many vented their frustration online at the prospect of Coronation Street without Debbie Webster.

Following last night’s scenes, viewers were once again quick to share their thoughts and they had nothing but praise to bestow upon acting queen Sue, who stole the show with her work.

Metro reader Ann wrote: ‘Sue is such a brilliant actress, she deserves an award for tonight’s episode alone, the way she portrayed receiving such distressing news, the shock, the disbelief, the fear etc was so true to life and I totally forgot I was watching TV and wanted to hug her – as I bet many others did too.

Ann added that Sue ‘commanded the screen totally and demonstrated how many must feel at such a cruel diagnosis’.

‘Well done Sue and thank you too for taking on such a difficult role, it must be totally draining to do so but raising awareness and demonstrating true feelings can only help others in the process, no-one is alone -well done.’

Fellow Metro reader Christina said: ‘A very emotional watch tonight and I know there’s going to be more difficult episodes to come with Debbie. She is an absolutely brilliant actress and she had me in tears too as I recently lost my dad to Lewy Body Dementia.’

Martina echoed such a sentiment, writing: ‘Absolutely brilliant acting tonight, I love her and I cried when Kevin hugged her and said he doesn’t know what he would do without her and she replied well you don’t have to , well done Corrie tonight.’

The powerhouse scenes, however, left viewers divided as, despite giving Sue her well-earned flowers, they were quick to add that the quality of her performance just reinforces why Debbie should be staying put.

‘Superb, deserves an award already,’ said Wendy of Sue’s performance. ‘A sin and shame if she leaves Corrie but my goodness she could get so much wrk. Brilliant actress.’

Janet, meanwhile, branded Sue ‘So good’, adding: ‘WHY does she have to go.’

Metro reader Sue Prescott said: ‘Shame she is leaving, she’s the only one that brings a bit of humour to the show, will be sorry to see her!’

Patricia added: ‘I really wish it was a wrong diagnosis and Debbie gets to stay in Corrie and has her happy every after with Ronnie.’

Debbie star Sue addressed the fan backlash to the storyline in a recent interview, saying: It’s really lovely that Debbie is loved’.

‘And I didn’t realise what people thought of Debbie, they love Debbie and that’s brilliant. But Debbie’s not going anywhere yet.

‘‘Debbie has been diagnosed and this is her journey. The whole of the story is to see her journey, isn’t it? To see this journey and tell it.’
