Two people have been arrested in connection with a tragic jet ski hit-and-run that claimed the life of 18-year-old Ava Moore, a beloved Texas teen and rising basketball star. The fatal incident occurred on Sunday evening at Grapevine Lake, a popular reservoir in North Texas.
According to the Grapevine Police Department, Moore was kayaking on the lake when she was struck by a jet ski carrying two female riders. While one passenger remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities, the operator of the jet ski fled with a male companion, igniting a multi-agency manhunt.
On Wednesday, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced the arrest of Daikerlyn Alejandra Gonzalez Gonzalez, who has been charged in Moore’s death. Paxton’s office also confirmed the arrest of the man who allegedly helped Gonzalez flee the scene. Authorities have not publicly identified the man, but both individuals were confirmed to be in the country illegally.
The investigation involved several law enforcement agencies, including the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Grapevine Police, Dallas Police, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. A previously released image of the suspect helped lead to their identification and eventual capture.
“This senseless tragedy has left a family and an entire community heartbroken,” said Attorney General Paxton. “We will ensure that justice is served.”
