Two people have been arrested in connection with a tragic jet ski hit-and-run that claimed the life of 18-year-old Ava Moore, a beloved Texas teen and rising basketball star. The fatal incident occurred on Sunday evening at Grapevine Lake, a popular reservoir in North Texas.
According to the Grapevine Police Department, Moore was kayaking on the lake when she was struck by a jet ski carrying two female riders. While one passenger remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities, the operator of the jet ski fled with a male companion, igniting a multi-agency manhunt.
On Wednesday, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced the arrest of Daikerlyn Alejandra Gonzalez Gonzalez, who has been charged in Moore’s death. Paxton’s office also confirmed the arrest of the man who allegedly helped Gonzalez flee the scene. Authorities have not publicly identified the man, but both individuals were confirmed to be in the country illegally.
The investigation involved several law enforcement agencies, including the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Grapevine Police, Dallas Police, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. A previously released image of the suspect helped lead to their identification and eventual capture.
“This senseless tragedy has left a family and an entire community heartbroken,” said Attorney General Paxton. “We will ensure that justice is served.”
Moore’s death has sent shockwaves through her community. The young athlete was known for her dedication on the basketball court and her kind, determined spirit off of it. Friends and family have described her as a bright light with a promising future.
In a public statement, the Grapevine Police Department said, “Our thoughts are with Ava’s family and friends during this difficult time. Texas Game Wardens remain committed to keeping our public waters safe.”
Gonzalez, a native of Venezuela, now faces serious legal consequences for fleeing the scene of a fatal incident. The charges and any potential immigration-related proceedings are still unfolding.
This heartbreaking case has renewed concerns about boating and water safety, particularly during the summer months when lakes and reservoirs see increased recreational use. It also raises questions about accountability and enforcement in cases involving non-citizens.
Authorities urge anyone using watercraft to prioritize safety and follow state regulations. Incidents like this one, they stress, are preventable.
Ava Moore’s community continues to mourn the loss of a vibrant young life taken far too soon. A memorial is being planned in her honor, with supporters rallying around her family during this time of unimaginable grief.
As the legal process moves forward, many are hoping that justice for Ava will not only bring closure but also serve as a reminder of the importance of responsibility on public waterways.
